early season bow hunting
got a question for you guys that start the season early. i mean like in a month or less. i obviously dont bow hunt nor have i had much in the way of
velvet bucks on cam so here is my question for you.
when your season starts do you have any deer that are still growing there racks? if so, and the one you have been watching for months shows up yet you
can tell he still has some growing to do before he is maxxed out do you shoot or let him finish and hope you get a crack at him later?
maybe this is a dumb question and they are all done growing before anyones season actually starts. just curious.
just curious as well, who here starts their season the earliest?

They're all done growing here by the time season starts. The earliest we have started here is the last weekend in August. This year it starts Sept.
3rd. If it's like last year some will still be in velvet and some rubbed out.

they will be 99% done growing when seasons open... but for me personally, a velvet buck would be more of a trophy than a few extra inches. i hope i
get a crack at a velvet buck one day

theres no doubt ive seen the passion for bow hunting here like ive never seen before, i know im missing out on two months of prime hunting where the
deer arent pushed by idiots (in my area anyway) slinging lead all over the place. i did buy a bow 5 years ago knowing nothing about them and it ended
up being way to short for me and i couldnt use it. had big plans with my tax money this past year to get one, but had a tranny go out of my durango so
there went that. now with no job and not much available it may be awhile yet. i will be bow hunting someday and im sure i will love it.

I could not agree more with I Hunt 365. I would definetly give a few inches to be able to harvest a mature full velvet buck.

Season opens here in MO on September 15th. The majority of bucks will be out of velvet by then. However, 2 seasons ago I had an encounter with a
bachelor group of 2 years old bucks on opening day. Two of the three were still in velvet. A mature buck is a blessing to me no matter what shape or
form. If I want to get picky though, velvet is right up there with a droptine buck to me!

I can normally find rubs anytime after the first week of Sept, sometimes sooner. Our bow season begins Oct 1 so the chances of legally taking a velvet
buck are slim to none.

I have been running cameras for the last 5 years here in north Ga. And about the 3rd week of aug. the growing has just about stopped. The shedding
starts last week and the first week of sept. good luck

Bucks in this area are pretty well finished growth by mid August and after that the blood vessels shrink and the antler beneath the velvet hardens.
Most of the rubbing occurs about the first week of September.
Our bow season starts September 1 and there's good opportunity to shoot a buck in full velvet. I've only managed two by bow so far but have a dozen
or so via rifle - for many years firearm season started Sept 1 but, fortunately, was moved ahead to allow for a bow season first.
